Buena Vista Auxiliary members invite you to join us!
Buena Vista Auxiliary is a nonprofit volunteer organization committed to supporting children's literacy through the Buena Vista Tutorial Program, an early intervention literacy program for elementary school children. The Auxiliary is run solely by volunteers, empowered to create and administer programs to meet the changing needs of its community. We are an auxiliary of Assistance League of Diablo Valley.
Our members are business professionals, mothers, master's students, entrepreneurs, and educators who wish to support literacy programs and other local community service activities. Our members are from the greater Contra Costa County community.
Auxiliary volunteers contribute their time, skills, and resources to our causes, while gaining new friendships and enhancing their personal and professional skills. Buena Vista Auxiliary membership also provides opportunities to participate in ongoing education and leadership programs.
Since receiving its charter from National Assistance League in 1988, Buena Vista Auxiliary members have provided over 46,000 service hours to support our local school districts and communities, raising over $1,000,000.
Buena Vista Auxiliary received a generous donation of $25,000 from RPM Mortgage in November 2009 on behalf of its employees towards the Buena Vista Tutorial Program!

In the 2008-09 membership year, Buena Vista Auxiliary celebrated their 20th anniversary. In celebration of this milestone, Buena Vista Auxiliary donated $5,000 worth of educational supplies to Shore Acres Elementary School, one of the schools that participates in Buena Vista's Tutorial Program. Buena Vista Auxiliary fulfilled a wish list from Shore Acres of educational supplies that enhanced the school's innovative Parental Involvement nights. Provided educational supplies included dictionaries, fluency timers, bilingual books, games and flashcards, supplying 65 families with items that will help empower parents with the tools to better support their children in reading, homework and school.

Tutors, liaisons and principals of the Buena Vista Tutorial Program
In May 2009, Buena Vista Auxiliary hosted an Appreciation Reception for the teachers/tutors, liaisons, and principals of the 12 schools that participate in the Buena Vista Tutorial Program. Approximately 80 people attended the event, including Ms. Rose Lock, the Assistant Superintendent of the Elementary Schools for the Mount Diablo Unified School District.
Each of the 12 schools that participated in the tutorial program this year left the evening with thank you gifts of $450 worth of school supplies. Each basket was filled with items the tutors themselves had selected from a wish list, making the items exactly what the schools needed. The excitement in the room as the tutors opened the baskets was apparent.
"This was the first time we have done anything like this," said Karen Douglas, Philanthropic Programs Chairman of Buena Vista Auxiliary. "It was a fabulous opportunity to bring representatives from the schools together with Buena Vista Auxiliary members. Both groups so appreciate the other's contribution and dedication to improving student literacy. A wonderful warm energy filled the room and there was a buzz of rich, genuine conversation between the educators and the members of Buena Vista Auxiliary."
