The Kids on the Block philanthropic program is designed to provide a non
threatening environment in which children learn about disabilities, safety issues
and social problems. The program includes an exchange between students and puppets to clarify, expand ideas or answer questions about the topics covered in the scripts. Viewing a Kids on the block performance is an unforgettable educational experience. The "kids" vividly and effectively model relationships between people, both with and without disabilities, by using frank and often humorous communication of facts and feeling between the puppet characters and the audience.
Assistance League of Diablo Valley offers these programs for grade levels K-3 and includes the following topics:
Kindergarten: Safety scripts dealing with safety--fire and strangers--teasing. Program lasts approximately 25 minutes.
1st Grade: Scripts dealing with fire safety and bullying. Program lasts approximately 35 minutes.
2nd Grade: Scripts dealing with divorce, learning disabilities, physical disabilities (cerebral palsy) and emotional disabilities.
3rd Grade: Scripts dealing with physical disabilities (blindness) and bullying. The program lasts approximately 40 minutes.
